Product Description

In Firefly: The Game, players captain their own Firefly-class transport ship, traveling the ‘Verse with a handpicked crew of fighters, mechanics and other travelers.  As a captain desperate for work, players are compelled to take on any job -- so long as it pays.  Double-dealing employers, heavy-handed Alliance patrols and marauding Reavers are all in a day’s work for a ship’s captain at the edge of the ‘Verse.  Firefly: The Game is a high-end thematic tabletop boardgame from Gale Force Nine (GF9).  It will be the first in a series of tabletop hobby boardgames and miniatures games from GF9 set in the Firefly Universe.

  1. Theme makes it worth it 3 Star Review

Posted by on 20th Oct 2015

At its heart, this is an economic game, which would usually send me running for the hills. But the game carries the theme well enough that I still enjoying playing it. After all, the economics revolve around struggling to keep your ship flying through the 'Verse, essentially putting you in the shoes of Mal Reynolds. I'd like to see a little more direct player interaction/conflict, but overall a very solid game.

  2. Made with love, You can get lost in this game 4 Star Review

Posted by on 6th Mar 2014

Many review sites have said the same thing about this game. High quality components. Deeply thematic. The Game time is highly optomistic. I agree with those statements. From the time you open the box to the point where you prime the engine of your firefly class ship and start looking for crew, jobs, and just plain aimin' to misbehave, you can see that this is a well thought out game that was made from a true base of love and admiration for Joss Whedon's Firefly/Serenity 'verse.

The components are great. The board, models, cards, and money are well done with great art and wonderful flavor in the language.

The rules are pretty straight forward and game mechanics are easy to grasp.

The goal of the game, and getting to that goal is where the game has its only flaw. And it's not a flaw in the respect of "this is hard to understand or unobtainable." It is a flaw in that the players can get lost in the mechanic of finding jobs, crew, and misbehavin' so much that they are meandering around the board having a good 'ol time without really making progress towards the overall game goal.

Not that many players may mind that. They'll be enjoying the text and flavor of the game so much. But after a few hours of play if players have not made substantial progress towards the goal they may get frustrated or give up, albeit after having a grand time playing.

The only other possible downside, and this is dependant on the players, is that there are only two ways interact with other players; one direclty by being in the same sector with them (and even then it's hiring disgurntled crew off a competitor's ship) or indirectly (moving the Alliance cruiser and/or Reaver Cutter to obstruct a player's plans).

Overall, I really enjoy this game. Fun to play with friends, or even solo. But plan for an evening or even a weekend to play. Find a crew. Find a job. Keep flyin'!

I really enjoyed this game on the first play. The mechanics are solid, the pieces are high quality. What's best -- the theme is great. Really loved that show.
